When you’re growing your own weed, it’s imperative that you know to Kill All Menat just the right time.
Some of you may ask… why? What is the point to such a heartless massacre? Are men not cannabis plants too?
Well, it’s simple science (and common sense) really. As you may already know, male plants do not yield the sweet buds we desire as they grow to become mature specimens. They can prove to be quite helpful when it comes to the early stages of vegetative sexual development; but after a while, they’re only taking up valuable time, space and resources in your operation, which could be going to your luscious females.
You may say #NotAllMen; but unfortunately, in this case, it IS all male plants who have this characteristic. You must act fast, or sacrifice the integrity of your entire grow. You will struggle to gain the returns you’re looking for on your crops if you allow the sexes to mingle and pollinate as they grow to full size. You’ll end up with seedy marijuana, similar to how it was ‘back in the day’ – lacking the thick, frosty trichomes we have all become used to.
Which is why they must die – that is, unless you’re planning on breeding; in which case, they should actually stay. However, if this is your first time growing, we advise against it.- Advertisement –
The issue with separating males from females is that male hemp seeds are quite difficult to discern from females before they germinate and reveal their orientation. Depending on where you’ve sourced them, you probably won’t know the gender of your plants until you have waited for them to develop for a while – usually 6 weeks.
So, what to do about the problem of ‘toxic masculinity’ in your grow – and when is the right time to strike?
Identifying the Males
Discriminating between M and F may be ideal for your grow, and there are telltale signs; but for a newbie without any prior information or experience, it may prove to be no easy task.
Generally speaking, females grow to be much more enticing and attractive than the males (parallels, people?!). As such, you will be able to spot the difference after you switch from the vegetating to the flowering phase. This process can take anywhere between 3-10 days to occur, so it’s important you check back on them daily.
The males will usually reveal themselves first, with their pre-flowers emerging as little cluster balls of pollen. Females will often have skinnier stems, with pre-flowers which appear with little translucent-white hairs. Generally speaking, the leaves of the females will additionally be fuller and more defined, with a higher concentration of leaves than the males.
There’s also such a thing as hermaphroditic cannabis plants, which are both male and female. For the purposes of your grow, however, you want to treat these plants as males – they will pollinate the other plants in your grow, which is what you’re really looking to avoid.
We recommend you check out the video below and use it as a guide, if you wish to discern the sex of your young cannabis plants during the flowering phase. The video details where to find the sex organs of the plant, and more:
Uprooting the Patriarchy
Once you’ve identified which specimens are which, it’s time to take your male plants and segregate them from the females altogether, creating a perfect utopia. This should be easy enough if they’re isolated within individual pots. If they’re in the same soil, use a shovel to uproot them from where they stand. Try not to use your hands, or risk spreading pollen all across your grow.
The Benefits of Feminised Seeds
We at Friendly Aussie Buds recommend that you attempt to get your hands on some feminised seeds. These seeds will germinate and flower without the promiscuous influence of male genetics, which will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. It also makes much of this article obsolete…

Finally, we want to clarify that all of the not-so-subtle jabs at gender politics in this article are obviously light-hearted and satirical… happy growing!
